Former cricket umpire Harold 'Dickie' Bird has been voted in as the new president of his beloved Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

The 80-year-old, who represented Yorkshire and Leicestershire during his playing days before moving into umpiring, received a 91 per cent approval from members.

Bird succeeds Geoff Boycott as the county's president and follows in the footsteps of luminairies such as Lord Hawke, FS Jackson, Sir Leonard Hutton and Brian Close.

The Yorkshire Twitter feed revealed Bird had accepted the role "with a tear in his eye" and also confirmed an honorary life membership for legendary India batsman Sachin Tendulkar.
