Police are trying to trace the owners of a lost Yorkshire Terrier.

The small male dog was found wandering around Sefton Park earlier today.

It was handed into the Police Commissioner's office at Allerton police station on Rose Lane just before midday.

A lady had spotted the black and tan dog wandering alone near traffic.

The pooch was looked after by Jane Kennedy's staff before a Liverpool City Council dog warden picked him up.

The dog was wearing a tartan body harness and a distinctive black leather collar with silver bones on it.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We are looking to trace the owner of the dog and if anyone recognises him they are asked to contact police on 101.”

A picture of the pet is circulating social media as good Samaritans try to track down the owner.

Mayor Joe Anderson is one of the 286 people to re-tweet the cute photograph so far.
