A walker taking part in a charity challenge was rescued after collapsing while tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

The Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation was called about 5.20pm today to help the 31-year-old man who was taking part in an organised walk.

He was reported to have collapsed on the ascent of Ingleborough from Chapel-le-Dale, above Braithwaite Wife Hole.

The man was treated by paramedics at the scene and team members stretchered him a short distance to an air ambulance, which flew him to hospital for further treatment.

CRO volunteers had earlier been called out to a 22-year-old man taking part in an organised Yorkshire Three Peaks walk, this time on the opposite flank of Ingleborough.

The team was alerted about 3.30pm after the walker was reported to have a ‘locked knee’ near The Allotment, on the descent from Ingleborough to Horton in Ribblesdale, and was unable to continue.

A team spokesperson said: “CRO responded but were unable to locate the casualty; it then transpired that he had managed to make his own way off the hill and was located by a team member near Borrins [3km north-west of Horton].”

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge involves summiting Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in turn in a 39km (24-mile) route.
