Kane Williamson came to the rescue with a priceless unbeaten 90 after a nightmare start had threatened Yorkshire's LV= County Championship ambitions on day two of the Scarborough Cricket Festival.
The Division One leaders slumped to five for two after losing openers Adam Lyth and Alex Lees in the first three overs of their response to Sussex's 368 all out.
But the New Zealander, strongly backed by Jonny Bairstow and Andrew Gale who hit 77 and 35 respectively, restored calm and helped the hosts reach a respectable 258 for five before the action was abridged due to bad light.
Resuming on 315 for eight, Sussex added 53 to their overnight score with Steve Magoffin weighing in with 39 before falling to Adil Rashid, who was the pick of the Yorkshire bowlers with three for 32.
Second-placed Nottinghamshire also staged a recovery to move into a strong position at stumps on day two against Northamptonshire at the County Ground.
Resuming on 38 for four in response to the hosts' 260, Michael Lumb hit 99 and Riki Wessels, Chris Read and Ajmal Shahzad also added half-centuries as Notts reached a healthy 384 for eight at close, with Shahzad unbeaten on 65.
Strong bowling performances from Richard Jones and Jeetan Patel left Warwickshire in the ascendency at stumps on day two against Somerset at Taunton.
Responding to the visitors' 367 all out, Tom Abell's 95 lifted Somerset to a gruelling 286 all out with Jones and Patel, who both finished with figures of 4 for 81, doing most of the damage.
Opener Paul Horton completed his 20th first-class century as Lancashire fashioned a sturdy 256 for five in response to Durham's 340 on day two at Old Trafford.
After the visitors added 11 to their overnight total, Horton set about savaging their attack before he finally fell lbw to Chris Rushworth on 114. Horton was ably supported by Ashwell Prince, who was unbeaten on 58 at close.
Gloucestershire set about punishing Division Two promotion favourites Worcestershire for their opening day profligacy on an entertaining second day at New Road.
Alex Gidman hit a fine 146 and Gareth Roderick finished just two runs short of his century as the visitors reached 378 in response to Worcestershire's poor first innings total of 194.
The hosts went some way towards addressing the damage as they reached 154 for two in their second innings at close, with Richard Oliver not out on 84.
Second-placed Surrey remain well-placed to capitalise on their rivals' woes despite a gutsy response from bottom of the table Leicestershire at Grace Road.
Steven Davies added 27 to his overnight total before falling lbw to Rob Taylor for 174 as Surrey sailed to a first-innings total of 480.
But the hosts responded well, with Niall O'Brien top-scoring with an unbeaten 62 as they reached 303 for seven at close off 72 overs.
Seamer Chris Wood claimed figures of five for 39 as Hampshire skittled Kent for 191 in response to the visitors' 380 all out at Canterbury. Hampshire tightened their grip by reaching 57 without loss at stumps.
Monty Panesar also took a five-wicket haul as Essex bowled out Glamorgan for 161 in response to the hosts' 286 at Swansea. But Essex laboured to 131 for five in their second innings.
