One of the largest book sales on the East Coast is hitting York City next weekend.
York Hospital Auxiliary will hold its annual Book Nook Bonanza, featuring more than 80 skids of books that will cover 300 tables and the floor of the York City Ice Arena, said Lisa Oriolo, events specialist with WellSpan Health's York Health Foundation.
Everything at the sale is donated from the community, from books to music to games and puzzles, she said.
"People in the area look forward to this sale every year," she said, as well as many visitors from all along the East Coast. Last year, more than 3,000 people came through the sale, she said.
The event is "55 years going strong" and benefits a different WellSpan program each year, Oriolo said.
This year, funds will go toward the health system's Sexual Assault Forensic Exam Nurse Team, which examines victims of sexual abuse.
About 50 volunteers have been working on the event since Labor Day, she said. Prices are largely discounted, she said, and it's typically $1 for a paperback book and $2 for a hardback. And there are a lot to choose from.
"The interesting thing is we have a really expanded old, rare and collectible area," Oriolo said. The sale also has a huge children's section, specialty magazines and comic books, she said.
Community: The event is "totally green," Oriolo said, as it partners with the York Rescue Mission and recycles to make sure unused books and materials can be used to benefit the community.
"There's a lot of pride in this event as a York event," she said. "So many people help us within the area."
She said the event has received a record number of books for this year's sale, and there are sure to be some good buys.
"You never know what you're going to find," she said. "It's just so unique in here ... and the prices are great," she said.
