"It's June 14, 2013, and today is our day," declared York High Valedictorian Abigail Yu Chen to her fellow classmates.

York High School celebrated the graduation of 257 seniors during a commencement exercise for the Class of 2013 Friday at William and Mary Hall.

Chen talked about the changes the world has experienced in the four years since she and her classmates began high school. She listed a variety of recent global achievements from 14 adults being declared cured of HIV to NASA'sCuriosity rover finding evidence of an ancient streambed on Mars.

Salutatorian Joey Kun Hsu said he's spent the last several weeks wondering what the future holds for him and his classmates.

"Life is always what you make of it," Hsu said. "It's how well you respond to disappointments and failures that come your way with grace and perseverance."

Hsu said it was inspiring to watch his classmates work hard for their achievements like the countless hours of practice members of the marching band attended to prepare for half-time performances or the football team braving the late summer heat to be ready for the first game of the season.

"Your determination and your resilience has made my time at York High School truly inspirational," he said.
